Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding (NUS) has a famous history. It was founded in 1920 as the Mykolayiv Shipbuilding Institute and during nearly 90 years it trained about 50 thousand engineers, specialists and masters for shipbuilding and related branches of industry and national economy.
Since 2008 Ryzhkov Sergey Sergeyevich, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Shipbuilding and Ukrainian Higher Institute of Education, Academician and President of the International Academy of Sea Science, Technologies and Innovations.
Nowadays the University is a complex of the efficient team of scientists and lecturers and the strong material and technical basis.
According to its structure the University comprises Naval Architecture Institute, the Mechanical Engineering Faculty, the Institute of Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering, the Institute of Humanities, the Engineering and Economic Faculty, the Institute of External and Distant Learning, the Institute of Postgraduate Studies, the Preparatory Faculty, Kherson Branch of the NUS, Pervomaisk Polytechnical Institute, Feodosia Polytechnical Institute, the Centre of Pre-university Training, Professor Alexandrov Maritime Lyceum.
57 Departments of the University employ 5 State Prize Laureates of Ukraine and USSR, 58 Doctors of Sciences and Professors, 265 Candidates of Sciences and Assistant Professors.
There are 30 Research Schools headed by famous scientists. Among the youth there is one Laureate of the Presidential Prize for the Young Scientists and three Laureates of the Verkhovna Rada Prize for the most talented young scientists in the field of the fundamental and applied research and scientific and technical development.
The development of fundamental and applied research aimed at solving of current problems dealing with the sea transport, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, power engineering and other fields of industry is the strategic concept of scientific work at the University.
Scientific activity is provided by the Research Department, the Higher Educational Shipbuilding Research Centre, the Research Institutes of Ecology and Power Saving Problems and Underwater Technology, by 42 scientific contract teams, 7 applied-research laboratories.
The University Library is one of the largest university libraries in the South of Ukraine. It provides the informational resources of the scientists’, postgraduates’ and students’ research work with the diversified corpus of the scientific and technical and educational literature.
NUS trains specialists in 26 Directions and 29 Specialties. Some of them are Shipbuilding and Sea Technologies; Welding; Engineering and Metal Studies; Air- and Rocketbuilding; Computer Sciences; Program Engineering; Power Mechanical Engineering; Heat Power Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Engineering Mechanics; Ecology, Environmental Protection and Balanced Nature Management; Electrical Engineering and Electrical Technologies; Electronic Equipment and Systems; Instrument Engineering; Computer Engineering; Systems of Engineering; Information Security Systems; Electromechanical Engineering; Law; Philology; Design; Physical Training and Sports; Economics and Enterprise; Management.
The studying is accomplished both for account of national budget and by contract basis. Besides, during the studying the students have possibilities to become the second higher education.
There is a student self-government in NUS that comprises the Student Parliament, the student trade-union committee, the student ecological association of the Mykolayiv region and clubs of interest.
For our foreign students and the students from other Ukrainian towns there are two hostels.
The students of NUS can have a wonderful rest at the “Korabel” (“Shipbuilder”) and “Aquatoria” (“Waters”) recreation centres.
